Boiler Upgrade Scheme Guide ·
Back Boiler Removal Grant UK: Can You Get the Work Funded?
A back boiler removal grant does not exist as a separate national scheme. However, the cost of disconnecting or removing an old back boiler may be included when ECO4 or another programme funds a complete heating upgrade.
The important distinction is that funding is awarded for improving your home, rather than simply taking an unused appliance out of a fireplace. Your household circumstances, property rating, current heating system and proposed replacement will determine whether support is available.
This guide explains when removal may be funded, who could qualify, what happens during the work and what to check before accepting an offer.
Is There a Government Grant Specifically for Back Boiler Removal?
No current UK government scheme pays solely for taking a back boiler out of a fireplace. If the appliance is already disconnected and you only want to create more space or renovate the fireplace, you will normally need to pay for that work yourself.
Funding may become available when removal is necessary to complete an eligible heating improvement. For example, an installer may need to disconnect an inefficient back boiler before fitting a modern heating system elsewhere in the property.
In this situation, the work may form part of the overall project price. It is not a separate cash payment made to the household.
Three different situations to understand
Household situation | Is funding likely? | Possible route |
|---|---|---|
Removing an unused boiler for a fireplace renovation | Usually no | Private payment |
Replacing an inefficient back boiler as part of a home energy upgrade | Possibly | ECO4 or ECO4 Flex |
Removing a back boiler and changing to a heat pump | Possibly | Boiler Upgrade Scheme or another low carbon heating programme |
What Is a Back Boiler?
A back boiler is fitted behind a fireplace or gas fire. Older systems use it to heat water for radiators and a hot water cylinder. These boilers were common in British homes during the second half of the twentieth century because they kept the main appliance out of sight.
Many remaining back boilers are non condensing models. They normally use more fuel than a modern condensing boiler and can be difficult to repair when original parts are no longer readily available.
The boiler may also be connected to an older open vented system with a cylinder, water tanks and ageing pipework. This is why replacing one can involve considerably more work than exchanging a wall mounted boiler in the same position.
Gas and solid fuel back boilers are different
Some back boilers burn mains gas and sit behind a matching gas fire. Others are connected to a coal or wood fire. The correct removal process depends on the fuel, flue, water connections and condition of the appliance.
Never assume an old unit is harmless because it has not been used recently. It must be inspected before the fireplace, pipework or chimney is altered.
Can ECO4 Pay for Back Boiler Removal and Replacement?
ECO4 is the main route that may support an eligible household with an inefficient back boiler. It operates in England, Scotland and Wales until 31 December 2026.
The scheme requires participating energy suppliers to improve qualifying homes with poor energy efficiency. It can support insulation, heating controls, renewable heating and certain boiler improvements.
An old non condensing back boiler may be treated as an inefficient heating system. ECO4 can support a heating system upgrade when the assessment shows that it is suitable and helps the property meet the required energy improvement.
This does not mean that every household with a back boiler receives a new boiler. ECO4 uses a whole home assessment. The final package might include insulation, heating controls and a different heating system. The measures are specified by the assessment and approved by the organisation funding the project.
Who may qualify through the benefits route?
A person permanently living in the home may qualify through one of the current ECO4 benefits:
Universal Credit
Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
Pension Credit Savings Credit
Income Support
Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income related Employment and Support Allowance
Housing Benefit
Child Benefit within the applicable household income limits
Some households receiving the relevant Warm Home Discount rebate may also have an eligibility route. The property and proposed improvement must still meet the scheme rules.
The property must also qualify
Owner occupied homes normally need an initial EPC rating of D, E, F or G. A qualifying benefit alone does not guarantee that a back boiler replacement will be approved.
The assessor considers the condition of the heating system, insulation, expected energy improvement and technical suitability of possible measures. An energy supplier can also decide which projects it will fund and how much funding it will provide.
Read the complete ECO4 application guide before submitting your details to understand the survey and approval process.
Can you qualify without receiving benefits?
ECO4 Flex can help certain households that do not receive a qualifying benefit. Participating councils and devolved administrations can refer households that are experiencing fuel poverty or are vulnerable to living in a cold home.
Possible routes include a combined gross household income below £31,000, qualifying health conditions and other local vulnerability criteria. The exact referral method depends on the council or devolved administration covering your home.
A Flex referral confirms a route into ECO4. It does not guarantee that an energy supplier will fund your back boiler replacement.

Free eligibility check with no obligation. Final approval depends on the relevant scheme and home assessment.
Does ECO4 Guarantee Free Back Boiler Removal?
No. Advertising often describes ECO4 as a guaranteed free boiler grant, but that is not how the scheme works.
Ofgem explains that ECO is an obligation placed on energy suppliers rather than a cash grant programme. Suppliers choose the projects they support, the measures they fund and the amount they contribute.
Some qualifying households receive a fully funded package. Others may be asked for a contribution, particularly when the job includes extensive pipework, building repairs or work outside the approved energy measures.
Ask for written confirmation of the following before agreeing to an installation:
The total project price
The amount covered by funding
Any contribution you must pay
Whether the back boiler will be removed or only disconnected
Whether the old gas fire is included
Who will repair the fireplace and surrounding wall
Whether old tanks and redundant pipework will be removed
What warranty covers the new heating system
Can the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Cover a Back Boiler Replacement?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can help if you own a property in England or Wales and want to replace the back boiler with an eligible low carbon heating system.
It does not fund a new gas boiler. Its purpose is to support a complete move away from the existing fossil fuel heating system.
The current grant values include:
£7,500 towards an eligible air to water heat pump
£7,500 towards an eligible ground source heat pump
£2,500 towards an eligible air to air heat pump
£9,000 for an eligible air to water or ground source heat pump replacing oil or LPG heating at an off gas grid property during the current uplift period
£5,000 towards an eligible biomass boiler in limited off gas grid circumstances
A typical mains gas back boiler would normally fall under the standard heat pump rate rather than the higher oil and LPG rate.
The grant is deducted from the installer’s price. It is not paid into your bank account. An MCS certified installer applies on your behalf after assessing the property and agreeing the proposed installation with you.
Will the grant pay specifically for removing the back boiler?
The grant contributes towards the eligible heating installation as a whole. It does not reserve a separate amount for removing the old appliance.
Your installer’s quotation should state what will happen to the back boiler, gas fire, cylinder, tanks and pipework. The existing back boiler must stop operating as part of the home’s heating system, but physical removal and fireplace restoration should never be assumed unless they appear in the written scope.
See the current Boiler Upgrade Scheme guide for the full property, technology and application rules.
What About the Warm Homes Local Grant?
Lower income households in England may also qualify for the Warm Homes Local Grant. The programme supports privately owned homes with an EPC rating of D to G.
Household income usually needs to be £36,000 a year or less. Some homes can qualify through an eligible postcode or benefit route even when income is higher.
The scheme focuses on insulation, solar energy, controls and low carbon heating. It does not normally fund a straightforward replacement gas boiler. A council assessment may recommend a heat pump and include the work required to stop using the back boiler.
Availability is controlled locally. A council may have a waiting list or may prioritise households with no working heating, so meeting the national criteria does not ensure immediate installation.
Back Boiler Funding Across the UK
Nation | Main routes to investigate | Important point |
|---|---|---|
England | ECO4, ECO4 Flex, Boiler Upgrade Scheme and Warm Homes Local Grant | Warm Homes funding normally supports low carbon heating rather than another gas boiler |
Wales | ECO4, ECO4 Flex, Boiler Upgrade Scheme and Nest | Nest may offer heating help to an eligible household without working heating or hot water |
Scotland | ECO4, ECO4 Flex, Warmer Homes Scotland and Home Energy Scotland support | The Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not operate in Scotland |
Northern Ireland | Local energy efficiency support and current NISEP offers | ECO4 and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme do not operate in Northern Ireland |
The old Northern Ireland Boiler Replacement Scheme is closed. Households there should check current support before relying on pages that still advertise the previous programme.
Does the Back Boiler Have to Be Removed Completely?
Not in every project. There is a difference between disconnecting an appliance and physically taking every part out of the fireplace.
Decommissioning the boiler
A qualified engineer can make the old appliance permanently inoperative by dealing safely with its fuel and water connections. The boiler body may sometimes remain behind the fireplace if complete removal would cause unnecessary structural work.
Complete removal
Complete removal involves opening the fireplace and taking out the boiler unit. The gas fire, flue connection and parts of the surrounding fireplace may also need attention.
This option may be chosen when the homeowner wants to remodel the room, expose the chimney opening or install a different fire. Building repairs and decoration are often separate from the heating installation.
Why the written scope matters
An advert promising “free back boiler removal” may only include safe disconnection. Ask the installer to write down precisely what will be removed and what will remain inside the chimney breast.
Also ask who will make good the wall, hearth, flooring and decoration after the heating work. These items may not qualify as energy efficiency measures and could become the homeowner’s responsibility.
How Much Does Back Boiler Replacement Cost Without Funding?
A back boiler to combi conversion commonly costs around £3,000 to £5,000 in 2026. Complex work can exceed this range.
The price depends on:
Whether the boiler is removed or left safely in place
The location of the new boiler or heat pump
The length and condition of existing pipework
Whether a larger gas supply pipe is required
Removal of the cylinder and water tanks
Radiator replacement or upgrades
Flue and condensate drainage requirements
Fireplace and chimney repairs
Access, parking and labour prices in the local area
A low quotation may cover the heating work while excluding plastering, joinery, decoration and waste removal. Compare the scope as well as the final price.
For a heat pump, the total cost depends on the property’s heat loss, insulation, radiator sizes and hot water requirements. A proper room by room heat loss calculation is more useful than a quote based only on the number of bedrooms.
What Happens During a Funded Back Boiler Upgrade?
Initial eligibility check: The provider checks your household, tenure, postcode, benefits and property details.
EPC review: Your current Energy Performance Certificate is checked or a new assessment is arranged.
Home survey: An assessor records the heating system, insulation, ventilation and condition of the property.
Heating design: The installer decides what system can safely meet the home’s heating and hot water demand.
Funding decision: The supplier, council or scheme administrator confirms what it is prepared to support.
Written agreement: You receive the scope, contribution details, warranties and planned dates.
Installation: The existing system is made safe and the approved measures are installed.
Commissioning and documents: The installer tests the system and provides the required certificates, controls and warranty documents.
Do not remove or disconnect the back boiler before the survey unless a qualified professional says urgent safety work is necessary. The scheme may need evidence of the original heating system and its condition.
Rules for Tenants and Landlords
A private tenant may have an ECO4 eligibility route, but written landlord consent is required before work starts.
Standard boiler repair and replacement are generally restricted in privately rented homes under ECO4. Renewable heating, first time central heating and certain wider improvement packages may still be eligible. The property normally needs an EPC rating of E, F or G for private rented ECO4 support.
The landlord’s income does not decide the tenant’s ECO4 household eligibility. However, the landlord controls permission for changes to the heating system and may be asked to contribute under some programmes.
Social housing follows different rules. Tenants should contact their council or housing association because the provider may already have a planned heating improvement programme.
Safety and Verification Checklist
A back boiler involves fuel, combustion, water and flue connections. Never attempt to disconnect it, break it apart or remove the gas fire yourself.
Use a Gas Safe registered engineer for work on a gas back boiler
Check that the engineer is qualified for the relevant appliance category
Use an appropriately qualified heating engineer for solid fuel equipment
Do not light a fire in front of a redundant boiler unless a professional has confirmed the arrangement is safe
Ask how the flue and ventilation will be treated
Keep all commissioning, warranty and Building Regulations documents
Confirm funding terms in writing before work begins
Never pay an unexpected doorstep fee to “release” grant money
Before accepting an ECO funded offer, compare its promises with the official Ofgem guidance for households and landlords. Ofgem states that eligibility does not guarantee installation and that a household can sometimes be asked to contribute.
Common Back Boiler Grant Mistakes
Assuming removal and decoration are included
Heating funding may cover only the work needed to install the approved system. Fireplace rebuilding, plastering and decoration must appear in the written agreement if you expect the installer to complete them.
Removing the appliance before the assessment
This can remove evidence needed to establish the original heating arrangement. Wait for the scheme survey unless there is an immediate safety issue.
Believing an eligibility form is final approval
An online result is an initial indication. Approval normally follows evidence checks, a property assessment, technical design and confirmation from the funding organisation.
Accepting a system that has not been properly designed
The replacement must suit your home and hot water needs. A small combi may struggle in a larger home with several bathrooms, while a poorly designed heat pump may be expensive to operate.
Allowing an unverified caller into the property
Ask for the business name, registration details, scheme route and funding organisation. Verify these independently before sharing financial documents or signing a contract.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a free grant to remove a back boiler?
There is no standalone grant for removal alone. The work may be included when an eligible programme funds a complete heating upgrade, but the written quotation must confirm what is covered.
Does ECO4 cover back boilers?
ECO4 can support an eligible heating system upgrade where an old back boiler is inefficient and the proposed measures meet the scheme rules. Household eligibility does not guarantee a replacement because the property must be assessed and an energy supplier must agree to fund the project.
Can ECO4 pay for a back boiler to combi conversion?
It may support this conversion in an eligible owner occupied home when the back boiler is an inefficient heating system and the upgrade forms part of a compliant ECO4 project. Approval depends on the assessment and supplier.
Can I qualify if I am not receiving benefits?
You may qualify through ECO4 Flex if your council or devolved administration participates and your household meets an income, health or vulnerability route. Other schemes may also use income or postcode criteria instead of requiring benefits.
Will a heat pump grant cover back boiler removal?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme contributes towards the eligible heat pump installation as a whole. The installer should include the treatment of the existing back boiler in the quotation, but removal is not paid as a separate grant.
Can an old back boiler be left behind the fireplace?
Sometimes a qualified engineer can decommission the appliance and leave its body safely in place. Whether this is suitable depends on the boiler, fire, flue, water connections and future plans for the fireplace.
How long does back boiler replacement take?
A private back boiler to combi conversion commonly takes two to three working days. A funded whole home project may take longer because it can include insulation, ventilation, radiator work and several inspections.
Do pensioners automatically qualify?
No. Age by itself does not create automatic ECO4 eligibility. Pension Credit, another qualifying benefit, ECO4 Flex or a separate local support route may provide eligibility.
Can a landlord apply for a back boiler grant?
A private landlord can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for an eligible heat pump installation. ECO4 generally assesses the tenant’s circumstances, and standard boiler replacement is restricted in privately rented properties.
Is a grant paid directly to me?
Usually no. ECO4 funding is arranged through the supplier and delivery chain. Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the grant is deducted from the installer’s price.
Check Your Position Before Removing the Boiler
Start by identifying whether the back boiler is active, safely decommissioned or connected to a working gas fire. Then check the property’s EPC, household eligibility and realistic replacement options.
Do not agree to removal based only on an advert promising a free boiler. A genuine process should include an eligibility check, property survey, suitable heating design and written funding decision.
