Can I Get a Free Boiler
ECO4 Guide ·
Can I Get a Free Boiler? Your Eligibility and Cost Checklist
If you are asking “can I get a free boiler”, the answer is sometimes. Your household, home and proposed replacement must qualify, and the approved offer must cover the full installation. Receiving benefits or having an old boiler does not guarantee a free replacement. Start with the checks below.
InstantGrant is an independent grant information and application support service. We are not the government, a funding body, an energy supplier or an installer. We do not award grants or guarantee eligibility, funding or installation.
Last checked: 8 October 2026. This checklist covers UK households. It distinguishes a possible funding route from an approved offer and a fully funded installation.
What must I check before expecting a free boiler?
Check your location, housing tenure, household circumstances and existing heating before expecting a free boiler. These decide which programmes you can explore and what work may be allowed. A further funding decision establishes the actual offer. Only a written agreement covering the whole installation can confirm whether there is anything to pay.
Four checks between an enquiry and a fully funded installation | ||
Check | What you need to establish | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
Household | A recognised benefits, income, vulnerability or other eligibility route | That your boiler will be replaced |
Property | The correct location, tenure, energy rating and permissions | That every heating measure is permitted |
Heating proposal | An assessment showing suitable work that the programme allows | That a provider has agreed to fund it |
Written offer | The approved work, funding, contribution and included costs | That optional extras or future maintenance are free |
Keep those stages separate when reading an advert or using an online checker. “You may qualify” normally means an enquiry can proceed. It does not mean a particular boiler has been approved, ordered or paid for.
Does owning my home make me eligible?
Homeownership can provide a route to heating support, but it is not enough on its own. For the standard ECO4 homeowner route, the property must have an energy efficiency rating of D, E, F or G, and the household must meet an eligible pathway. The proposed improvements need a separate assessment.
ECO4 is the Energy Company Obligation, which requires participating energy suppliers to support eligible energy improvements in Great Britain. It is scheduled to run until 31 December 2026. It does not operate in Northern Ireland.
Have your address, current Energy Performance Certificate and heating details ready. The EPC describes the home's energy performance; it does not establish whether a particular boiler is broken, repairable or eligible for replacement.
For the wider household and property checks, read our guide to checking ECO4 eligibility.
Can I get a free boiler if I receive benefits?
A qualifying benefit can help establish household eligibility under ECO4, but it does not guarantee a free boiler. The property's energy rating, tenure and proposed heating work still matter. Ask the delivery provider to confirm your precise benefit route, the evidence it needs and whether any contribution would be required.
Common household circumstances and what to check | ||
Your circumstances | Possible relevance | Next check |
|---|---|---|
Universal Credit | A recognised ECO4 benefit route | Property eligibility and permitted measures |
Pension Credit Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit | Recognised under ECO4 | Do not substitute State Pension alone for Pension Credit |
Child Benefit | An ECO4 route with household income limits | The limit for your household composition |
PIP alone | Does not establish a standard ECO4 qualifying benefit route | Another qualifying benefit or an appropriate Flex route |
No qualifying benefit | Other income or vulnerability routes may exist | ECO4 Flex and relevant national or council programmes |
This is a screening table, not the complete benefit list. Use the name on your current award notice. Different forms of a benefit can have different rules, so avoid relying on an old application page or a caller's general description.
Being retired, disabled or over 60 is not a universal free boiler entitlement. The relevant scheme must assess the actual circumstances, and devolved programmes can use different eligibility rules.
Can I get a free boiler if I rent my home?
Renting changes which rules apply, especially under ECO4. Private tenants need landlord permission, and the standard property route targets energy ratings E, F or G. However, ordinary replacement or repair of an existing boiler is generally excluded in privately rented homes. Qualifying household circumstances do not remove that restriction.
Some permitted heating improvements, including qualifying first time central heating, renewable heating or a district heating connection, may be considered. These are specific routes, rather than permission to replace any rented home's existing gas boiler.
If you rent from a council or housing association, contact its repairs or energy efficiency team first. Social housing has separate ECO4 property and measure restrictions. Do not assume an advert aimed at homeowners describes what your housing provider can offer.
Report a failed heating system to your landlord promptly. A funding enquiry does not replace the landlord's repair responsibilities or confirm an installation date.
Does my boiler's age or condition qualify it for replacement?
Boiler age alone does not establish funding eligibility. Under ECO4, the heating assessment distinguishes inefficient equipment from an efficient boiler that has broken down, and considers whether repair is economical. The fuel type and tenure also affect the permitted work. A professional assessment is more useful than an assumed age threshold.
Why the existing heating system matters | |
Existing heating | Question to ask the assessor |
|---|---|
Older noncondensing gas boiler | Can this qualify as an inefficient heating upgrade under the rules for my tenure? |
Broken efficient gas boiler | Is it economically repairable, and which repair or replacement route is permitted? |
Working efficient boiler | Would an eligible renewable heating improvement be considered instead? |
Oil or LPG boiler | Which off gas heating rules apply? ECO4 does not fund replacement oil or LPG boilers. |
Room heaters with no central heating | Could a first time central heating route apply after assessment? |
You do not need to decide whether the boiler is condensing or diagnose a fault yourself. Give the assessor its make and model, any service report and a description of the heating problem. Do not remove the casing to investigate.
Replacing a boiler is only one possible outcome. A proposal might involve repair, a different heating system or a wider package of energy improvements. Ask why the proposed work suits your home and which programme permits it.
Which funding route should I check in my UK nation?
Your home's location decides which programmes are available. ECO4 operates in England, Wales and Scotland, while devolved support has separate household and property tests. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales but funds eligible low carbon heating. Northern Ireland households must check their own current local support arrangements.
Where to begin with heating support | ||
Nation | Routes to explore | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
England | ECO4, Warm Homes: Local Grant and Boiler Upgrade Scheme | Council low carbon heating support is not a grant for a new gas boiler |
Wales | ECO4, Nest and Boiler Upgrade Scheme | Nest may offer conditional boiler repair or replacement where heating or hot water is absent |
Scotland | ECO4 and Warmer Homes Scotland | The assessed package and private tenant restrictions matter |
Northern Ireland | Current programmes through the Housing Executive's NI Energy Advice service | ECO4 and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme do not apply |
England: Warm Homes: Local Grant can arrange agreed energy improvements for eligible households in privately owned EPC D to G homes. Household income must usually be £36,000 a year or less, with certain postcode and benefit alternatives. It can fund heat pumps and insulation, but not a new gas boiler.
Wales: Nest assesses homeowners and private tenants against household and energy rating rules. Welsh Government guidance says homes without heating or hot water may qualify for boiler or storage heater repair or replacement. The offer is conditional, and private tenants need landlord permission.
Scotland: Warmer Homes Scotland can include heating improvements, potentially a new gas boiler, following assessment. Most approved costs are met, although some households may need to contribute. Private rented homes cannot receive improvements that the landlord is legally obliged to provide under the Repairing Standard.
Northern Ireland: ask NI Energy Advice which programmes are currently accepting enquiries and what conditions apply to your tenure. An older reference to a boiler grant does not confirm that the same offer remains available.

Start with your postcode through InstantGrant's independent enquiry service. The responsible provider must confirm eligibility, permitted work and the funding offer.
How do I know whether the installation is actually free?
An installation is fully funded only when the approved offer covers all agreed work without a required household payment or repayment. A grant that reduces the price is different from a free installation. Read the scope and price together, including removal, installation, necessary upgrades and any separately charged extras.
Three offers that should not be confused | ||
Offer | What it means | Your cost check |
|---|---|---|
Fully funded agreed work | The offer covers the specified installation | Confirm no required contribution, borrowing or excluded essential work |
Partial grant | Funding reduces the installation price | Confirm the remaining balance and payment schedule |
Loan or payment plan | You borrow or spread the cost | Check repayments, fees and any interest |
Ofgem confirms that some ECO4 projects can require a contribution. A contribution does not automatically prove an offer is fraudulent, and eligibility does not mean every installation is free. Obtain the complete terms before agreeing.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently provides £7,500 towards an eligible air to water or ground source heat pump. Qualifying oil or LPG properties without a mains gas connection can receive an additional £1,500 until March 2027. It does not fund a new gas boiler.
For example, an eligible £12,000 installation with a £7,500 grant leaves £4,500 to pay. This is a calculation example, not a market price estimate or a quote for your home.
Is the old boiler's removal included?
Are labour, commissioning and necessary materials included?
Are any required radiator, pipework, cylinder or electrical changes included?
What making good is covered after the work?
Is there a contribution, deposit, administration charge or finance agreement?
Who provides the warranty, and who handles installation faults?
What should I prepare before making an enquiry?
Prepare your address, tenure, household eligibility evidence and heating details before making an enquiry. Ask which programme the provider is assessing and what the next stage establishes. Share sensitive documents only through a verified process. Keep the survey proposal, funding decision and installation agreement as separate records.
Identify your tenure. State whether you own the home, rent privately or rent from a social housing provider.
Check the property details. Have the postcode and EPC available, or ask how the energy rating will be established.
Describe the household route. Use current benefit evidence or explain why an income or vulnerability assessment may be appropriate.
Describe the heating. Note the fuel, make and model, reported faults and any recent engineer's findings.
Arrange permissions. Private tenants should involve the landlord before installation is agreed.
Review the proposal. Confirm the measures, funding, costs, timetable and aftercare in writing.
ECO4 enquiries can be made through participating suppliers or appropriate delivery providers. A council may also assess a Flex route. An initial form is not an application for a guaranteed cash payment from Ofgem.

How can I check an offer and stay safe?
Check the named scheme, delivery organisation and installer before accepting a free boiler offer. Confirm the funding and any charges in writing, and verify credentials independently. Gas work must be carried out by an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. An eligibility enquiry must never delay dealing with unsafe equipment.
Read the HSE gas safety guidance for homeowners for advice on unsafe appliances and qualified gas engineers.
If you suspect an appliance is unsafe, stop using it and arrange the appropriate safety response. Do not wait for a grant survey or attempt to repair gas components yourself.
For any funding offer, verify who the organisation represents through a contact route you find independently. Do not rely solely on a logo, a government scheme name or a caller saying you have already been selected.
Common misconceptions about free boilers
Most misconceptions confuse one eligibility condition with a complete funding decision. Benefits, boiler age and an online result may help identify a possible route, but they do not establish the permitted installation or its final cost. Check the scheme, property, proposed work and written offer before assuming a replacement is free.
“Everyone on benefits gets a free boiler.” Property and heating rules still apply.
“A boiler over 10 or 15 years old automatically qualifies.” Age alone is not a universal entitlement.
“Every tenant can replace their gas boiler through ECO4.” Private rented properties have specific measure restrictions.
“Any request for a contribution means a scam.” Some genuine programmes or offers require a contribution; verify the full terms.
“A heat pump grant makes the installation free.” A remaining balance may still be payable.
Frequently asked questions
The most useful answer depends on the programme and the work being proposed. These questions cover common situations, but they should not be treated as an approval notice. Use them to decide what to ask the provider, then confirm your household route, property conditions and final costs through its assessment process.
Can I get a free boiler on Universal Credit?
Universal Credit can establish an ECO4 household eligibility route, but it does not guarantee a boiler replacement or a fully funded installation. The provider must assess the property, tenure and permitted work. Ask whether the proposed replacement is eligible and whether the written offer includes any required contribution.
Can I get a free boiler without benefits?
Possibly, if an appropriate income or vulnerability route applies and the work is approved. ECO4 Flex and devolved programmes have their own tests. Other support may fund a heat pump or insulation instead of a gas boiler, so ask both whether you qualify and what the programme can actually provide.
Can pensioners get a free boiler automatically?
No. State Pension age does not create a universal entitlement to a free boiler. Pension Credit can be relevant under ECO4, while Scottish and Welsh programmes use their own household rules. The home, heating proposal and funding offer still need assessment before a fully funded replacement can be confirmed.
Can I choose any boiler brand under funded support?
Do not assume that funded support includes unrestricted choice of brand or model. Ask the delivery provider to identify the equipment proposed, why it is suitable, what the offer covers and whether alternatives are available. Confirm any extra cost before agreeing to an upgrade outside the approved package.
How long does it take to get a free boiler?
There is no single guaranteed timeframe across the UK's heating programmes. Evidence checks, surveys, landlord permission, funding decisions and installer availability affect the process. Ask for a project timetable after assessment, and distinguish an enquiry response from a confirmed installation date. Deal with urgent heating or safety problems separately.
Can I claim funding after buying a new boiler?
Do not assume a programme will reimburse a boiler you have already bought or installed. Approval and installation requirements vary, and Warmer Homes Scotland explicitly excludes completed work. Contact the relevant provider before committing to grant dependent improvements, and obtain written confirmation of the process it requires.
How InstantGrant can help you check the next step
InstantGrant provides independent grant information and application support to help you identify possible heating routes. Start with your postcode, tenure, household circumstances and existing heating. The responsible council, supplier, scheme administrator or installer must confirm the permitted work, funding and any contribution before an installation can be treated as approved.
The next useful step is a scheme specific assessment, followed by a clear written offer. Keep necessary repairs and safety action moving while funding options are considered.
