How to Apply for the Warm Home Discount 2026/27: Full UK Guide
The Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 discount applied directly to your electricity bill each winter. For the 2026/27 scheme year, most eligible households in England and Wales receive it automatically — the government matches benefit records with energy supplier databases and the credit appears on your bill without you doing anything. In Scotland, the process is partly automatic and partly application-based, depending on which group you fall into.
Important: InstantGrant is an independent grant information and application-support service. We are not the UK government, DWP, Ofgem, or any energy supplier. We do not administer the Warm Home Discount or any other energy scheme. All information on this page is verified against GOV.UK and official energy supplier guidance for the 2026/27 scheme year. Always confirm your eligibility and payment status directly with your energy supplier.
The £150 is not paid to you as cash. It appears as a credit on your electricity account, or as a voucher if you are on a traditional prepayment meter. Understanding how and when you will receive it — and what to do if you do not — is exactly what this guide covers.
What the Warm Home Discount Is
The Warm Home Discount is an annual government-backed scheme that requires energy suppliers with more than 1,000 domestic customers to provide a £150 electricity bill discount to eligible households each winter. Suppliers with fewer than 1,000 customers can participate voluntarily.
What It Is Not
Before going further, it is worth clearing up three schemes that readers consistently confuse:
Scheme | What It Pays | Who Gets It | How |
|---|---|---|---|
Warm Home Discount | £150 off electricity bill | Low income and benefits households | Automatic or via application |
Winter Fuel Payment | £200 to £300 | State pension age households in fuel poverty | Automatic |
Cold Weather Payment | £25 per 7-day cold spell | Certain benefits recipients | Automatic |
These are three separate schemes. Receiving one does not affect your entitlement to the others.
Who Qualifies for the Warm Home Discount 2026/27
Eligibility works differently depending on where in the UK you live. The qualifying date for the 2026/27 scheme year is 23 August 2026.
England and Wales: Core Group 1
You qualify automatically in England and Wales if you receive the Pension Credit Guarantee Credit element and your energy supplier participates in the scheme. The government matches DWP records with supplier databases. If you are matched, the £150 appears on your electricity bill between November 2026 and January 2027 with no action required from you.
England and Wales: Broader Group (Core Group 2)
You may qualify if you receive one of the following means-tested benefits:
Universal Credit
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Pension Savings Credit
Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
Housing Benefit
Child Benefit
Universal Credit income threshold: If you receive Universal Credit, there is an additional income condition. Your household income must have been less than £1,758 in at least one relevant assessment period. This threshold is stated on GOV.UK but is missing from most guides — if your UC income is above this in every assessment period, you may not qualify for the Broader Group even on Universal Credit.
For the Broader Group in England and Wales, the government again uses data matching. Most eligible households receive a letter between October and December 2026 confirming eligibility. In some cases, the letter asks for additional information — you must respond by 26 February 2027 to be considered for that year's discount.
Scotland: Core Group (Automatic)
In Scotland, households receiving the Pension Credit Guarantee Credit are contacted automatically and receive the £150 without needing to apply.
Scotland: Broader Group (Application Required)
The Scotland Broader Group operates differently from England and Wales. If you receive qualifying benefits but are not in the automatic Core Group, you must apply directly to your energy supplier when they open their Broader Group application window, which opens in November 2026.
Broader Group places in Scotland are limited and allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Do not wait — apply as soon as your supplier's application opens.
The Qualifying Date: Why 23 August 2026 Matters
This is one of the most commonly misunderstood details of the scheme. The qualifying date is 23 August 2026. To receive the 2026/27 Warm Home Discount, you or your partner must have been named on your domestic electricity bill or account by that date.
If you moved home, switched supplier, or only recently had your name added to the bill after 23 August 2026, your eligibility for this scheme year may be affected even if you otherwise meet all the benefit criteria.
Pension Credit can be backdated by up to three months — so if you become eligible for Pension Credit and backdate it to cover 23 August 2026, you may still qualify for this year's discount.
How to Apply: Step by Step
Step 1: Check Whether Your Supplier Participates
Not every energy supplier is in the scheme. Suppliers with more than 1,000 domestic customers are legally required to participate. Check the current GOV.UK list of participating suppliers before assuming your supplier is included.
Step 2: Confirm You Are Named on the Electricity Bill
Your name, or your partner's name, must have been on the electricity account by 23 August 2026. Check your account or bill to confirm this.
Step 3: England and Wales — Wait for Your Letter
If you are in England or Wales, you do not need to submit an application. The government contacts you. Eligible households receive a letter between October and December 2026. If the letter asks for additional information, respond by 26 February 2027.
Step 4: Scotland Broader Group — Apply Directly to Your Supplier
If you are in Scotland and in the Broader Group, contact your energy supplier as soon as their Broader Group application window opens in November 2026. Apply immediately — places are limited and allocated first come, first served. If you apply and are successful, you will not receive a government eligibility letter. Contact your supplier to check your application status.
Step 5: Check Your Bill Between November and March
For most households, the £150 appears as a credit on the electricity account between November 2026 and January 2027. All payments must be made by 31 March 2027 at the latest.
What If You Do Not Receive a Letter?
If you believe you are eligible but have not received a letter by mid-January 2027, contact the Warm Home Discount helpline:
Warm Home Discount helpline: 0800 030 9322 Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm Deadline to call: 26 February 2027
Do not leave this too late. Contacting the helpline after the deadline means you will not receive the discount for this scheme year.
How You Receive the £150
The Warm Home Discount is not paid to you as cash. How you receive it depends on your meter type:
Standard Credit Meter
The £150 appears as a credit on your electricity account, reducing the amount owed on your bill or adding to your credit balance.
Smart Prepayment Meter
The £150 is applied directly as a credit to your smart meter.
Traditional Prepayment Meter
You receive a voucher — by post or email from PayPoint — which you use to top up your meter at a Post Office or PayPoint location. Use it promptly. Vouchers have an expiry date.
Dual Fuel Customers
If your energy supplier provides both your gas and electricity, you may be able to receive the discount against your gas bill instead. Contact your supplier to request this — it is not automatic.
Park Homes: A Separate Application Route
If you live in a park home and pay the park site owner directly for your electricity rather than an energy supplier, the standard Warm Home Discount route does not apply to you.
Park home residents have a separate scheme: the Park Homes Warm Home Discount, administered independently through Charis Grants. To qualify, you must be a permanent resident of a park home and receive a qualifying benefit or meet the household income threshold (typically under £19,978).
Applications for the Park Homes scheme open annually. Check the Charis Grants website for the current application window and apply as soon as it opens — places are limited.
What Happens If You Switch Energy Supplier
Switching energy supplier while the Warm Home Discount is due can cause your payment to be delayed or missed entirely. Before switching:
Confirm with your current supplier whether your WHD payment has already been processed
Confirm with the new supplier whether they participate in the scheme and will honour your eligibility
If you are in Scotland's Broader Group and have already applied, contact your new supplier to check whether your application transfers
If your supplier goes out of business and Ofgem appoints a new one, check with the new supplier as soon as possible about your WHD status.
Warm Home Discount and Scams: What You Need to Know
The Warm Home Discount is one of the more heavily impersonated government schemes in energy fraud. Scammers use it to request bank details under the guise of "processing your payment."
The Key Rule
The UK government and Ofgem will never contact you asking for bank details in connection with the Warm Home Discount. The discount is applied directly to your electricity bill. There is no mechanism through which the government or Ofgem needs your bank account number. If anyone contacts you claiming otherwise, it is fraud.
Other Red Flags
An unsolicited call, text, or doorstep visit offering to "register" you for the WHD in exchange for a fee
Someone claiming the government owes you more than £150 and offering to "claim the full amount" for you
Websites that look like GOV.UK but use a different domain
Report any suspected Warm Home Discount fraud to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Winter Fuel Payment — for State Pension age households experiencing fuel poverty. Check eligibility on GOV.UK.
Cold Weather Payment — £25 for every 7-day period where average temperature drops below 0°C in your area, for households receiving qualifying benefits.
ECO4 — for households on means-tested benefits whose home is rated EPC D to G, covering insulation, boiler work, and heating upgrades fully funded.
Warm Homes: Local Grant — for households with income under £36,000 in participating English council areas, covering home energy improvements.
Your local council — many run hardship funds and energy support schemes for residents not covered by national programmes.
