Boiler Upgrade Scheme: frequently asked questions

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant worth?

The grant is worth up to £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, and £5,000 towards a biomass boiler. The money is paid to your installer and comes straight off your quote.

Do I need to be on benefits to get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

No. Unlike ECO4, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has no income or benefits test. Any eligible homeowner in England or Wales can apply, whatever their household income.

Who is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

You must own the property (including landlords and most small business premises), it must be in England or Wales, and you must be replacing a fossil fuel heating system such as a gas, oil or LPG boiler or electric heating. New build homes are generally excluded.

Do I need a valid EPC for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

You need a valid Energy Performance Certificate with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. Some exemptions apply, and your installer will confirm this before applying.

How do I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

You do not apply yourself. An MCS-certified installer applies to Ofgem on your behalf and discounts the grant from your quote. Our free check tells you whether you are likely to qualify before you get quotes.

How long will the Boiler Upgrade Scheme run for?

The scheme is funded to run until 2030, but grant levels and rules can be reviewed by the government at any time.
