ECO4: frequently asked questions

Who qualifies for an ECO4 grant?

Households receiving qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, ESA, JSA, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit usually qualify. Some low-income households can also be referred by their local authority or energy supplier under flexible eligibility.

What does ECO4 pay for?

ECO4 funds whole-home upgrades: loft, cavity wall, solid wall and underfloor insulation, first-time central heating, broken boiler repair or replacement, heating controls, and in some cases solar panels.

Is ECO4 completely free?

For most eligible households the measures are fully funded. Occasionally a small contribution is requested where the cost of a measure exceeds the available funding — you will always be told before any work starts.

Does my EPC rating affect ECO4 eligibility?

Yes. ECO4 targets the least efficient homes, so properties rated D to G are prioritised. Our checker can look up your EPC rating automatically from your postcode and house number.

Can private tenants get ECO4?

Private and social tenants can benefit, but the landlord's permission is required before any work is carried out, and landlords may need to contribute towards some measures.

When does ECO4 end?

ECO4 is scheduled to close on 31 December 2026. Applications made close to the deadline may not be completed in time, so it is worth checking early.
